Emotions are a natural human experience but at times they can interfere with our occupations, friendships, and family. They can cause us extreme discomfort and make it difficult to function in even the smallest of tasks.
Virtual Reality
I tell my clients that to treat OCD and anxiety, we need to be creative about the process to make sure that we are best targeting what is maintaining the anxiety response. Virtual reality offers a unique approach to address two common difficulties with exposure therapy:
1.) Virtual reality can be a great intermediate step between imagining yourself in a situation and physically being in the situation. For instance, if thinking about a scenario no longer makes you feel anxious but being in that scenario can seem like it would be too overwhelming, we can use virtual reality to help bridge the gap. 2.) Some things are just not feasible to do on a consistent basis or are hard to reproduce. If you have a fear of flying, it would be helpful to consistently put yourself in that scenario to help better reduce anxiety around flying. However, it may be a little unreasonable to have some take a flight multiple times a week! By using virtual reality, we can recreate the scenario of flying with no boarding pass needed. |
